Although the beautiful hills and valleys of Augusta Wine Country are best known as a hidden gem for wine enthusiasts, the St. Charles County, Missouri countryside is home to several spectacular hiking areas that can satisfy the beginning bushwacker or the seasoned sojourner.
Day One: Just off of Highway 94 and Highway 64/40, the Lewis and Clark trail winds you up and down the bluffs along the Missouri River, with stunning scenic overlooks the reward for taking the road less traveled. Arrive in the morning and plan to spend 3-4 hours on this hike, and be sure to take water and a snack to refresh you. Afterwards, head over to Defiance Ridge in Defiance, for a rewarding lunch. After lunch, head over to Halcyon Spa and Salon for a Deep Tissue Massage or a Heated Stone Massage to sooth your tired body. When you are ready to call it a day, head over to your Bed and Breakfast (be sure to book in advance) for check-in and a restful sleep. Take a quick walk to Augusta Brewing Company for one of their special brews and casual dinner and a toast to your hard work. Surrounded by twinkling lights, fresh air and beautiful sunset views of the valley below, the atmosphere ends a perfect day.
Day Two: Rise to the aroma of fresh brewed coffee, and breakfast cooking on the stove. Your innkeeper host will make sure you are sufficiently fueled for another day in the hills. After breakfast, you could choose Klondike Park. For a relaxing, not-too-strenuous hike/walk. The paved trails around the lake are easy on the knees, and the white sand beaches are a natural feature not often seen in Missouri landscapes. For a more vigorous hike, take the trail to the top of the bluff for a breathtaking view of the Missouri River Valley, then head down the switchbacks of the Hog’s Back Trail. Now head over to Montelle Winery for wine-tasting and tasty lunch. The setting is reminiscent of the old-world style winery that might be found in German’s Rhine Valley, you might be inspired to start humming “Hear we go a’wandering”. Nothing relaxes the soul like a good glass of wine and delicious food. Leave time in your afternoon and evening to visit some of the other wineries along the Weinstrasse, and in Augusta. A soak in your B&B’s hot tub or whirlpool will make your muscles happy and you will sleep peacefully in your comfy beds as your getaway winds down.
